Funny Conversations

I must be really lucky because I have the pleasure of overhearing the funniest/craziest/dumbest conversations.

Here is another example:

I went to the Courthouse this morning and walked towards the elevator to take it up to the fourth floor. A Polk County Sheriff was approaching the elevator at the same time. Already standing there was a lady.

Lady: "Officer, are you taking the elevator up to go arrest somebody that you have a warrant out for?"
Officer: "No, I'm going to unlock a courtroom door."
Lady: "Oh thank god."
Officer: "Why? Are you good? Do you have a warrant out for your arrest?"
Lady: "Yah. I have a warrant. But I"m just for a hearing now."

Unfortunately they got off at the third floor, and I did not see how the story ended. I was just in shock over this woman's stupidity. You cannot even make stuff up this crazy!

Thankful Thursday

I have LOTS to be thankful for this week. My meds must have kicked in?!

I am thankful that I have switched banks. I used to bank with Bank Iowa. It was becoming really inconvenient and when they paid all my bill pay payments twice in August, I terminated the relationship. I now have my primary account at Wells Fargo (and another account at First Federal because you can earn great rates on your account there!). Wells' online banking is much easier to use. And I even have an app on my smart phone to access my account information at any time.

I am thankful that my sister's ultrasound went well and it appears that she is having a baby girl as well! I will have my next ultrasound on September 16 where Tommy and I will find out the gender of our baby. Baby Takekawa (or jelly bean as some affectionately call her) is doing well.

I am thankful for my friends who have encouraged me to get Google Reader. It has made my blog reading experience far more manageable. Looking for more blogs to read- so send some ideas my way. Or, if you don't have a blog already- start one!

I am also thankful that maternity clothes shopping wasn't as miserable as I thought it would be. I stopped by GAP in KC last weekend and found some great stuff and it was on sale! bonus! Now I just cant wait to wear my maternity pants! Why did I not know how amazing they are?

Lastly, I'm thankful for i-tunes, bubble bath and a door on my office!

I hope you find something to be thankful for this week!

Recipes!

If you are looking for something to blog about, I would LOVE to have you post links to some of your favorite recipe. Tommy and I generally eat the same thing over and over because I am reluctant to try something new. Below are some links to some of my favorite recipes.

PUMPKIN BARS I've mentioned before that I LOVE these pumpkin bars. I made a batch the other day when my family headed to the lakehouse for the weekend. They were gone by the end of the weekend! My secret hint to this recipe is to use organic pumpkin. You can buy it in the organic section at HyVee. I have also found it at target right next to the regular canned pumpkin!

SPINACH AND ARTICHOKE DIP Have you ever been to Houston's? Not the city, the restaurant? They have this wonderful Spinach and Artichoke Dip. I found this recipe years ago, and it has never disappointed at family events. Some hints for this recipe is that I don't actually make the chicken broth, I just use Swanson's Chicken Broth. Also, the pecrino romano cheese you can find in the special cheese section at HyVee. This recipe may seem difficult to make, but it really is not!

CORNBREAD STUFFING This stuff is amazing! I found this recipe for the holidays in 2008 and have made it every Thanksgiving and Christmas since then. This is not the typical stuffing that you think of in a turkey. In fact, we never put it in the turkey. We make it as a separate side dish and we always double the batch because its that popular!

MAC N CHEESE I love fancy mac n cheese. I am always on the lookout for a good recipe. This is the recipe that I have been using the most. Its an adaption from one of Tommy and my favorite BBQ restaurants, Smoques BBQ in Chicago.

CHICKEN CARBONARA Tommy and I do not make this too often. But it really is a treat. Its fairly easy to make too. We pick up a Rotisserie chicken at the grocery store. The pancetta we find in the fancy deli meat section at HyVee. The pancetta can be a little pricey, which is annoying, but this is a good recipe if you are looking for a change. Also, leftovers are good. Note: we skip the walnut and lemon peel.

SPICY MACARONI Did I mention I'm always on a lookout for a good Man n Cheese recipe? This is another favorite. In fact, if you want something more sophisticated, then choose this recipe! It wont disappoint!

KAHLUA CHEESECAKE I love cheesecake. I do not have it too often because it can be difficult to make or it is too expensive to buy at the Cheesecake Factory. Admittedly, I've only made this recipe once, but it was great! Who wouldn't love liquor in their cheesecake?

Now share some of your recipes with me! Be sure to assure me that it is not difficult to make! Let me know if you try any of these recipes and enjoy them! If you try them and they don't turn out- sorry!

Happy Birthday Grandma Vos!!

Wow! I really haven't blogged since August 9?

On August 13 we had the pleasure of celebrating my Grandma's 90th Birthday! I think what made the celebration so special was the fact that all of her children, 15/16 grandchildren (including all spouses and kids) made it to the celebration. We had a wonderful celebration.

As we drove back to Des Moines that night, I had several things on my mind. I couldn't help but notice the complete joy beaming from my Grandma the entire day. You could see the happiness in her eyes to have her family around and to celebrate. There was so much happiness in the room that you forgot how difficult many of those years were for her. Let me provide some examples:

1. My Grandma was born in 1921. By the time of the Great Depression my Grandma's family had lost their farm and were literally broke.

2. My Grandma's father was completely blind by the time that my Grandma entered grade school. My Grandma's older siblings quit grade school so they could work on the farm to support the family. My Grandma was the first child in her family to complete 8th grade. My Grandma did not go to school past 8th grade.

3. My Grandma lost her second son when he was three years old in an accident on the farm. Her son literally died in her arms.

4. In 1971 my Grandpa was in a farming accident and was paralyzed from the was the waste down until he passed away in 1994.

As we drove home that night I wonder would I feel as blessed as my Grandma feels if this were my life? Would I still have the faith in God my Grandma has if these were my life experiences? Would I have the strength to survive these life events?

During the party most of the children and grandchild shared stories about my Grandma with each other. The most surprising stories involved my Grandma's tendencies to take off her shirt. Yes, you read that right. I think the other favorite story was hearing how my Grandma worked one summer cracking eggs at Oskaloosa produce to save $350 so the family could take a vacation to Yellowstone National Park. All the children agreed that it was one of the best memories of their childhood.

To me, its amazing that people with this work ethic, faith and determination even exist. And its a complete blessing that she is my Grandma.

Happy 90th Birthday, Grandma!

10 Things

Here are 10 Things I wish I knew this week:

I wish I knew...

1. When you go to a Mexican restaurant and do not finish the salsa, do they just dump it back into the big 5 gallon salsa bucket and reuse it? I'm always suspicious about Mexican restaurants that serve large amounts of salsa.

2. If the Chinese created the birth calendar that tells you the gender of your child, while do many Chinese people give up their child to have another one of a different gender? Do they not have internet access over there to look up when to conceive to get a certain gender? Don't know what I'm talking about? Click here.

3. Do Hardee's restaurants still exist? If so, can you get a kids' meal with a California Raisin toy?

4. Why is a bunny affiliated with Easter? Religion aside, shouldn't Easter Egg's be passed out by an animal that actually lays eggs?

5. How do I "follow" blogs? Literally, I cannot figure out how to follow people's blogs. I just check all of my favorite ones every morning.

6. How much are you supposed to tip on a "to go" order?

7. What happened to TGIF? Remember- ABC's Thank Goodness It's Friday? Full House, Step By Step, Perfect Strangers, Family Matters! I would love me some good Friday night tv!

8.  Not to be obsessed with tv, but why is Jersey Shore so entertaining? Why is it my favorite hour of every week?

9. Why does it take so long for movies to be converted from their original format to be displayed on our tv screens? With technology being as advanced as it is, shouldn't it be a faster turnaround?

10. Am I really having a girl?!

Weekend Fun!

I had little expectations for this weekend. This may be why I am enjoying it so much!

After taking a few naps today (blame pregnancy) I woke up around 5:30 with no idea what to do about dinner. Tommy suggested going to one of my Top 10 Des Moines Restaurants- Miyabi 9.

We split this....

This is the deluxe Sushi Platter. For my friends who stress about staying away from certain foods during pregnancy, you should know that I stuck with the vegi rolls and the California rolls which is made with steamed crab and has no mercury! Baby Takekawa will be just fine....

Sushi is not something I had ever had before I married Tommy. In fact, generally when he even mentions Sushi I generally say "no" within point two seconds. Today I was feeling a little more adventurous and agreed. I am glad I did! The Sushi was phenomenal! As always! Miyabi's has lots of other selections than just Sushi so even if you aren't a sushi fan you should still try it if you are feeling adventurous. I highly recommend doing the call ahead seating. The restaurant is quaint and it can be quite the wait as it is very busy on the weekends. We called at 5:30, arrived at 6, and were seated immediately.

After dinner I had planned on dropping my hubby off at the house and running a bunch of errands. Tommy surprisingly told me he did not mind going with me to run errands. Twice I disclosed to him that there were not less than ten stores I wanted to go to, and he still agreed! I had lots of coupons to use!

The best purchase of the night is my Autumn Wreath candle from Yankee Candle! Its a nice mix of cinnamon, spice and apple. I wanted to get the Pumpkin Spice candle, but Tommy liked the Autumn Wreath better. I figure if I ever want him to go shopping with me again I should either not ask his opinion or listen to his opinion when I ask.

Now off to bed as tomorrow we are headed out on the lake nice and early!

I hope you are enjoying your weekend!

Thankful Thursday

During July, I had a really hard time finding anything to be thankful for especially on Thursday. August, however, is a whole new story.

This week I am thankful for some good tv! That's right. Jersey Shore starts tonight! Also on tonight is the live eviction on Big Brother 13. And all this good tv is getting me ready for the premieres in the Fall!!! (I said it again! I can't wait for Fall!) Anybody heard any rumors about who will be appearing on Dancing with the Stars this season?!

This week I am also thankful that I am into my second trimester. Whoops- did I just officially announce that I am pregnant?! My first trimester was fairly miserable. I must have complained a lot because my mom was convinced I would not an epidural by month 7. Things are looking up now.

As always, I am thankful for wonderful friends and family! I love escaping away to a lunch or dinner with a girlfriend or two! Sometimes just an hour with a friend can really lift your spirits even if they don't necessarily even need to be lifted.

Lastly, I am thankful for some cooler weather today. My girlfriends must have been itching for it too because we spent our lunch on the outside patio underneath an umbrella while it rained. And it was wonderful!

I hope you found something to be thankful for this week too!
